Finding Home, Path to Belonging
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
FINDING HOME by Jennifer Lawrence
I have been an artist for some years now. My work is my voice, art practice is my passion. I am inspired by the beauty and community I find where I live, but also by the beauty and humanity I see everywhere.
‘Finding Home’ is about the settings we call home; such as our planet, our world, our immediate surroundings, the buildings in which we sleep and the communities in which we feel at home. The past 12 months have made us all stop and consider what home at its simplest means. ‘Finding Home’ is about the adaptability of humans and their ability rediscover simple comforts and community during hardship.
I am a painter who loves textile, and by creating this work I was able to dye, distress and paint into silk, marvelling all the while at its organic nature and tactility. Working this way has enabled me to combine my love of drawing, textile and painting. I have used silk in creating this body of work because it has tenacity and spirit, it is open to reinvention, it evokes memory and history. Using textile in combination with paint and canvas has been an artistic homecoming for me, and I hope this work sparks conversation and curiosity for those who visit.
